There is an excellent review of the research literature on Oats and the Gluten-free Diet by Tricia Thompson for the Journal of the American Dietetic Association, March 2003. It can be seen via the diabetes list at:  www.diabetes123.com/d_0j_600.htm  (Scroll down to #23)
The conclusions are generally positive, although it doesn't alter the problem of obtaining uncontaminated oats outside Scandinavia.
