I tried a Google search -had lots of hits, but didnt find an in depht
explanation - especially not the historical origins. When was
callisthenics invented ( between 1800 and 1900 ?) , and by whom ?
I am interested because the word "callisthenics" is very commonly used in
(american) fitness writings - but as a European I dont know it. It also
seem that "callisthenics" has a very broad definition, and is used with
different meanings.
The most common meaning seems to be forceful "bodyweight" exercises for
strenght and fl
exibility. I have just read the book "Combat conditioning"
by Matt Furey - are his exercises "callisthenics" ? Is yoga ? Is any
gymnastics ?
Please educate me further :-) Esben
