This is an excerpt of Table II from the following article:
Brocchi E et al, 2002. Endoscopic markers in coeliac disease, Digest Liver
Dis 34: 177-82.
Se (sensitivities), Sp (specificity), PPV (positive predictive value), NPV
(neg. predictive value), etc. of each single endoscopic sign and of all
abnormalities in duodenum in group of 78 CD patients.
Se (%)
Sp (%) PPV (%) NPV (%)
Micronodular pattern 57.7 100
89.7 89.7
Mosaic pattern 25.6
100 100 84
Reduction or loss of duodenal folds 74.3 99.3
96.7 93.5
Scalloping of duodenal folds 66.7 100
100 94.1
one or more endoscopic signs 93.6 99.3
97.3 98.3
Table I cites symptoms, duodenal appearance, and duodenal histology, with
final diagnosis of patients suspected of CD. Two of 7 patients with
duodenal ulcer or erosions without CD both had a decrease of duodenal folds
on appearance. The other five CD patients had normal duodenal appearances
but with villous atrophy upon histological evaluation.
Table III cites percentages for the same endoscopic signs listed in Table II
for 13 CD patients with partial villous atrophy and 65 CD patients with
subtotal villous atrophy.
The aim of the study was to evaluate endoscopic markers in the duodenal bulb
and 2nd part of the duodenum.
