Unfortunately, all outcomes are not the same at the Outback. My family, 3 of
us celiacs - who had not been to a restaurant in 4 years, arrived early at
the Naples, FL Outback last Monday evening. The gluten free menu was brought
out. Our server said she was familiar with what we could and couldn't have.
It was very dimly lit inside. After receiving my Caesar salad I saw no
croutons and proceeded to eat a forkful. Just before swallowing - too late
to stop - I crunched something hard and down it went. I poked around in the
salad and found 3 croutons inside. Obviously someone had just removed the
croutons from the top of the salad. ( I was absolutely abhorred at
swallowing gluten, as last Spring when I accidently ingested gluten at home,
I ended up having a TIA and endured 3 trips to the ER over the next few
weeks. ) We summoned the manager who nicely didn't charge me for my meal!
He filled out an 'accident report' in case I suffered ill effects and told me
we should send him any medical bills for payment. Some celiacs suffer with
loose bowels and gas. Gluten, for me, attacks my nervous system and gall
bladder mainly, then shows the internal effect by mucous in bms. So far I am
alright, but we won't return to the Outback even though my husband's and
son's GF meals were fine.
