I finally talked to Empire yesterday. Again they said they are NOT gf,
although the ingredients did not list anything that could contain
gluten. The bottom line is they are worried about cross contamination
since they are made in an area where they make all their gluten products
& use the same containers etc to make the latkes. (Empire does make
products that are gf but these are prepared in a totally separate
location). I suggested that they change their labeling somehow to alert
us to the problem so we don't keep checking every year (ie maybe have a
warning). I was told this would be passed to marketing.

BTW I am so grateful for the person that did tell me the latkes were not
gf because they were served at a meal I ate at a friends house last
Friday night and I was able to tell her I could not eat them (and tell
her yes the label doesn't say anything but the company says they are not
ok). This is a prime example of why labels need to be clearer, why
should our friends have to call us on every ingredient??
