Dear Listmates,

I have recently discovered through lab blood tests that my absoption of many drugs is much less compared to lab standard values. For example, if I were to take 2 over the counter tylenols, the lab cannot find a readable amount in my blood levels 1 hour after ingestion. I also do not feel tired or sleepy after ingesting codeine or neurontin which the dr says many people who are not celiac.

I am very careful about avoiding gluten as it makes me nauseous and headachey. My b12, folate and iron are all low or out of range even though I take supplements. I am not pencil thin probably beacue I do eat a fair amount of dietary fat such as mayonnaise (oddly, my cholesterol is fine).

I have some questions: 1) has anyone experienced this reduction of subjective drug effect (don't feel tired or sleepy) and tested low for drug levels in the blood 2)is there an explanation for this? I read some gastrology texts and noted that in some cases, at least 10% of celiacs do not heal completely for various reasons eg) non-compliance with the diet, collageonous sprue etc, and am wondering if I might be in the 10% as I can't think of any dietary indiscretions that would be causal.

My gastro wants to do another biopsy and I would like to make the most of it (yuk!) if he should look for specific lesions or activity in the small intestine that would be explanatory. Any suggestions before he gets me up on the biopsy table would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Lisa
