I just posted my question this morning asking for the percentage of
diabetics with CD, and I have already had a lot of replies. Most people
who gave their opinion estimated the percentage at 10%, while others
referred me to specific web pages. Thank you to all who responded.
After searching the web sites, here is what I found:
Diabetes Forecast, October, 2000, "Wheat Ails You", by Jean Guest: "1
in 20 diabetes patients have Celiac Disease."
Celiac Disease and Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus, March, 2001, by G.K.
Holmes: ".CD commonly occurs in Type 1 diabetes. It is recommended
that screening for CD should be part of the routine investigation to all
patients with type 1 diabetes.
Canadian Study from The University of Calgary: November, 1985-89. 236
diabetic patients were tested (none were IgA deficient) and 19 were
positive for IgA-EMA (8%).
Digestive Diseases and Diabetes, by James E. Everhart, MD, MPH. "The
percentage of diabetic patients with CD in France is 11%.The percentage
of American diabetic patients with abnormal bowel habits is
33.9%.Certainly IDDM patients with unexplained chronic diarrhea and
highly varying glycemia should be evaluated for celiac disease."
