Six thousand dietitians knew that gluten intolerance was the hot topic
at the recent American Dietetic Association (ADA) meeting held October
20 through 23, 2001 in St. Louis, MO.

Cynthia Kupper, RD, CD (GIG), Mary K. Sharrett, MS, RD, (OH), and
Shelley Case, B.Sc., RD (Canada) presented a 90-minute program called
Recipe for Gluten-Free Success. This program was well attended and
provided dietitians with the latest information available about celiac
disease, the Gluten Free (GF) diet, and research.

The exhibitors of gluten free products supported our program by passing
out bookmarks advertising the program and listing many GF companies.
This bookmark will be a handy resource for dietitians to give their
patients. The GF manufacturers attending the show grouped themselves
close together and in some situations were in side-by-side booths. It
was not possible to ignore their presence!

Shelley Case sold her new book Gluten Free Diet: A Comprehensive
Resource Guide during the Sunday Marketplace. Her booth was constantly
packed with people.

Cynthia Kupper was instrumental in getting final approval to formally
form Dietitians in Gluten Intolerance Diseases (DGID) as a specialty
unit within ADA. This specialty group will work towards a number of
goals, including providing expert advice to regulatory agencies and the
development of accurate education materials for patients and
professionals.

This band of dietitian advocates is not done. They were asked to
contribute articles to a number of newsletters and present program
proposals for the 2002 ADA conference.
