Hi all -- I need some help/advice with the GF diet from those of you with
far more experience than me.
Our 10-year-old son's biopsy was neg but has many of the Celiac/gluten
intolerance symptoms so we're following the diet for one year as an
experiment.
We were out of town last weekend and my mother and mother-in-law split the
weekend watching our kids. I packed all the food my mother would need and
only some food for my mother-in-law (she's been more open to learning the
diet). Before leaving I asked my mother-in-law what meals she had planned.
Dinner included mashed potatoes so I sent along a small container of
margarine clearly marked for my son's use. When we returned home it was
obvious to me she hadn't used the margarine. I found out this morning that
she told my mother (they socialize together often) that she didn't
understand where in the world I got an idea so crazy that our son had to
have his own margarine; "that a few crumbs shouldn't matter. She (meaning
me) needs to talk to a nutritionist or dietician."
At this point I'm more angry that she wouldn't do something I requested than
I am with the fact that a mistake was made. We've all made a few accidental
mistakes but this was intentional.
So...first question: Can any of you point me to a website or page of a book
that specifically says something about "zero tolerance" or "one molecule is
too much"? I've looked through Danna Korn's book and found a few paragraphs
about these facts which I'll copy for my mother-in-law to read but I'd like
another source also. Something written by a doctor or dietician would be
wonderful.
Second question: Our kids are supposed to stay with my mother-in-law for
two nights again next week while we're in Reno for a car show. Now I'm
hesitant to leave them with her. If we take them with us do any of you know
of any GF-friendly restaurants in the Reno area?
