Well at least I'm not the only one with this experience!  I do think there
is more to the carbohydrate issue, though I don't have all the answers.  I
have been reading some very interesting older posts by Jeannie Brand-Miller
over on the PaleoDiet symposium.  She seems to push for higher carbs, and
even sugary carbs.

One of the things she points out is that humans don't possess a taste for
sweets for no reason.  It obviously evolved due to some survival
pressures.  I wouldn't be surprised if having a minimum amount of sugars in
one's diet is beneficial, though this contradicts the usual advice.

I've previously read the book you've mentioned.  It's a bit dated, but it
seems solid.  Unfortunately, there's not much of a take-home message other
than "everyone's different".
