Greetings! I got a lot of answers to my questions. I just want to let
people know that I am aware of all of the standard tests out there and
that they require the consumption of gluten. What I was looking for,
really, was info on alternative or experimental tests that may be coming
down the pike that I could pursue. I have learned through experience to
be relentless in my search for better health (i.e., I'm stubborn and
don't give up easily :) ).
The replies I got were as follows:
* Lots of people are in the same boat and are also looking for a way to
confirm their celiac status without eating gluten (hear that, medical
researchers?? :) )
* And yes, most of the tests out there require the consumption of
gluten. There were a couple of vague references to tests done in Europe
that don't require the consumption of gluten, but I have no info on what
these are.
* There is a genetic test (HLA test) that tests one's genetic
predisposition to celiac that involves a simple cheek swab and doesn't
require the consumption of gluten (more info at http://www.finerhealth.com)
* Lots of people asked: why do I care about official testing since I
seemed to have solved my problem with a gf diet (I have to admit that
this type of answer wasn't all that helpful)
* Several people said that it would be helpful for me to be officially
diagnosed because then I could take advantage of tax deductions on my
food and if I ever land in the hospital they would take my need for gf
medication seriously
* A couple of people cautioned me on getting officially diagnosed
because then I would have a documented pre-existing condition that may
not be covered should I ever switch health insurance companies
* One physician said it sounded like I may have a grain protein allergy
versus celiac
Thanks for all the replies! Don't worry, fellow self-diagnosed
celiacs--I will continue my search (for the Holy Grail?) and let you
know what I discover!
