Dear list--
I'd like to emphasize the heavy metals issue brought
up in a recent post to the list. Heavy metal toxicity,
particularly mercury toxicity, has been connected with
many kinds of autoimmune illnesses, including food
allergy, inability to digest gluten (!),
hypothyroidism, reproductive problems (especially
amenorrhea and spontaneous miscarriage),
malabsorption/digestive and enzyme problems, multiple
chemical sensitivities, MS, autism, and chronic
fatigue, to name just a few!
About two weeks ago, I was diagnosed with mercury
toxcicity, at levels higher than anything that my
holistic doc had ever seen. It's hard to remember when
I got sick, but I've had at least an 8 year history of
chronic candidasis, leaky gut, airborne allergies,
food allergies, migraines, chemical sensitivity, then
CD about a year and a half ago. I thought my problems
were solved. When a gfcf rotation diet didn't help
much and I developed hypothyroidism and continued to
struggle with the candida issue, I knew that something
else was wrong and suspected some kind of metals
poisoning. I had a hair analysis from Great Smokies
which finally turned up the mercury. From my research,
I now know that my story of illness is consistent with
slow, chronic mercury poisoning.
To find out more about mercury toxicity and its
connection with autoimmune illness, check out this web
page from DAMS (Dental Amalgam Mercury Syndrome), a
support group based in Minneapolis:
http://www.amalgam.org/
This paper introduces the topic, but there's hundreds
of pages of information on the internet.
Given that so many of us on this list suffer from
chronic problems like malabsorption and food
allergies, even after going gf, I wanted to share what
I've learned with you. If your problems just aren't
clearing up, check into metals toxicity. As far as
mercury goes, many sources say that you can get better
by having fillings removed and using chelation
thearpy.
Anyone is welcome to contact me directly if they have
questions or would like more information. I will do my
best to answer in a timely manner.
