We regularly read claims from labs that the endomysial antibody test is
virtually 100% sensitive for celiac disease.
Yet Mulder and Rostami in Arnhem, Netherlands have shown that it is only 31%
sensitive in patients with partial villous atrophy,( ie less than full-blown
celiac but still bad enough to cause some grave problems).
Also, Dr Dickey in N. Ireland showed that ema was only 80% sensitive across
the board in his patients.
Other doctors have commentated that it is an unreliable test for patial
villous atrophy, and that its positivity correlates with the degree of
damage to the intestine.
I wonder if the labs in question should be a little more circumspect in
their claims?
Good health,
Tony (UK).
