If so, try disabling USB support and uninstalling the scanner, then reboot the machine and see what happens. Another user on another list had a similar problem and he called UMAX and they informed him that the problem(s) are two-fold: (1) the scanner puts out an overcharge of current from the scanner when first queried by Windows and, (2) Windows starts polling the device over and over....until you get the resulting error you described. M$ has acknowledged the problem and UMAX's answer was to upgrade to WIN98. The user was using WIN98 when the problem surfaced. After disconnecting the USB cord from the scanner when he wasn't using it, "seemed" to resolve the problem. IMVHO, I don't know if this is the solution to your problem but its a starting point.
