<<Disclaimer: Verify this information before applying it to your situation.>> Another factor to a person's adjustment is the symptoms they were having prior to diagnosis. A person who was on death's door, or for whom CD had a major impact upon their functioning, is going to be primarily relieved that the problem can be controlled by diet, no matter how onerous that diet is. However, the more CD gets publicized and properly diagnosed, the more mildly symptomatic or even asymptomatic people will be picked up (for example through a blood screening of family members). An asymptomatic dorm-living college student who eats lots of pizza and has limited money and cooking facilities is just going to have much more of an adjustment, and probably more of an intense grief reaction as well. The idea that they should just "buck up and be grateful" has been batted around here before, and is unrealistic and guilt-inducing, IMO. Laura
