Hi John

To remove applications from the Startup Group/Folder...

Right click on an empty area of the Taskbar (that rectangular area at the
bottom of your screen that has the tiny icons and the time in a "tray"
at the right and the "Start" button at the left) and choose Properties.
Then click on Start Menu Programs, then Advanced. Click on Programs. In
the right pane you will see a folder called Startup. This contains some of
the programs that start automatically when you boot Windows. (Others start
from "Run" entries at various places in the Registry, as commands in your
Autoexec.bat or Config.sys files, or via a "Load=" or "Run=" entry in the
Win.ini or System.ini files.) You can delete program shortcuts from your
Startup folder, or drag them to another folder in the Start Menu where
they won't start automatically but will remain available. You can also
drag other program shortcuts INTO the Startup folder so that THEY will
start automatically.

When you open "Taskbar Properties", "Start Menu Programs", "Advanced",
you see an Explorer view of your Start Menu. This is similar to going
to the folder "C:\WINDOWS\START MENU" via "Windows Explorer" or
"My Computer". (Sometimes it's easier to change the Start Menu by going
to the actual folder on your hard drive instead of going through "Taskbar
Properties" to get to the "Exploring - Start Menu" window.)

Another way to keep programs from loading at boot is to make a change via
the System Configuration Editor. (Since you are unlikely to have this in
your Start Menu, it's the file C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\MSCONFIG.EXE and you
can simply copy and paste what I just wrote into your "Start, Run" menu to
see what it's like.) I put a shortcut to this in my own Start Menu. (Right
click on the file C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\MSCONFIG.EXE when you see it in a
My Computer or Windows Explorer window, choose Create Shortcut, and then
drag the new shortcut into the "Exploring - Start Menu" window.)

When you run the System Configuration Editor program, click on the Startup
tab and you will see a list of most of the programs that automatically
start when Windows boots. You can remove the check mark from any of these
programs and prevent it from automatically loading next time. You can
always come back another time and replace the check mark to enable the
program to again start at boot.

Regards,
Bill
