<<Disclaimer: Verify this information before applying it to your situation.>> Hi All, Many thanks to all who responded to my posting on mustard and oats - I will summarize the results separately. This one is mustard. Dozens of responses all indicating that mustard seed is gluten free. One person found that the Coleman's that I got sick on before the labeling rules came along now lists flour as an ingredient. Vance named some safe brands of mustard but didn't say where he is from, they are not brands I can get here. He suggested the following which I am printing as it is an excellent suggestions for those of you in the US: "You might want to invest in the latest edition of the CSA's Products Listings for $8.00. Write to Celiac Sprue Association/United States of America, Inc., P.O. Box 3170, Omaha, NE 68131-0700. Or first check this website for a complete list of GF Products: http://www.celiac.com/products.html" Jessie Davis gave me two safe mustards - Trader Joe's Dijon adn Helman's Dijonaise. One reply said - I would be more suspicious of horseradish than mustard and adds 'All Heinz products are made with corn vinagar, so they are safe.' Pam said "I ALWAYS read the ingredients on the mustard jar. I don't eat the ones that list gluten [mostly wheat] in any form and have had no particular trouble. " Gayle "As the mustard plant is in no way related to grass/wheat, etc. there is no scientific chance that mustard seeds contain gluten/gliadin. However, many prepared mustards - i.e. mustards mixed with other things and sold in a liquid sauce form - and ground mustard put out by some spice dealers, have wheat flour added, to keep the dried, ground mustard easier to pour, and to thicken the "liquid" mustard sauces." Conclusion - Obviously, the mustard seed does not contain gluten. As with so many other foods it is 'contaminated' in the processing. My conclusion was based on an experience many years ago - before truth in labeling, that I was not anxious to repeat. Thanks very much to the list and all the thoughtful people on it.
