Here is a shareware program called RFT Reader that converts .rtf
files to plain text.  Sorry about the length of the URL.  You
might have to copy and past it in pieces in your brower to make
it work.

If it doesn't work, just go to Download.com and enter .rtf in the
search box and it will find it for you.
