As you are probably aware, when Windows 9x starts up, it looks in the C:\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup folder for shortcuts to programs. If any programs or shortcuts to programs are stored in this folder, Windows 9x runs them automatically when it is done starting up. OTOH, Task Scheduler is the program that Windows 98 uses to check the files and folders on your hard drive automatically. You can also use the Task Scheduler program to run almost any program at a specified time on a regular basis. When you schedule a task, you must specify the following info: -- what program you want to run -- how often you want to run it (daily, weekly, monthly, when your computer starts, or when you log on) -- what time you want the program to start running. For weekly and monthly schedules, you must specify what day to run the program to start. Start | Programs | Accessories | System Tools | Scheduled Tasks and/or double-click the Task Scheduler icon in the system tray on taskbar. Open the Add Scheduled Task item that appears in the Name column of the Scheduled Task window. It it's underlined, click it once, if not, double-click it. Windows 98 runs the Add Scheduled Task Wizard which takes you through the steps required to schedule tasks to run automatically. Follow the screen prompts and click on Next to move to the next step. Be sure to leave your computer turned on all the time, so that when the scheduled time arrives, Windows 98 runs your program. If your computer is turned off (or Task Scheduler isn't running) when the time comes, the program doesn't run. Some computers have a suspend or standby mode in which the computer remains on, but the disk drives, fan, and screen turn off. If your computer has such a mode, a standby option appears on the Shut Down Windows dialog box. To switch your computer to suspend mode, choose Start | Suspend. To wake up a computer that has partially powered itself down, move the mouse around without clicking, or press the Shift key a few times. The following third-party utilities may help optimize your PC if Windows 98 does not do all that you want it to do. DoWinStartup 1.0 (640KB) and After (45KB) are two free utilities found on Windows Magazine web site, http://www.winmag.com/ in the Top Shareware sections. IMVHO, the answer to your second question is yes unless someone else on the list has additional info.
