My $.02. Paul's probably on the right track on this. Usually the motherboard only supports one type of memory (SIMM or DIMM not both). Also was a hard drive or CD rom recently changed or upgraded? Few motherboards I have looked into permit this, mostly, I suspect, because SDRAM DIMMs tend to be faster than SIMMs. Just my $.02...
