I realize this is a bit too obvious, but I trust that you tried to FDISK/FORMAT by booting from a bootable floppy. (Wipes H.D. clean.) Re: Heads/Cylinders/Sectors-per-track, 4/805/26 = 83,720 sectors (approx. 42.8 Meg) and 5/907/17 = 77,095 sectors (approx. 39.5 Meg) is probably the nearest 17 sectors-per-track version of the standard BIOS Hard Drive Types that is smaller than the actual type.
