<<Disclaimer: Verify this information before applying it to your situation.>> Hello Everyone, I received 8 replies in response to my question about the availability of GF corn tortillas in New Jersey so that I could ask my brother-in-law to bring me some when he visits us in August. [I posted this because the info I retrieved from the archives was conflicting and mostly fairly old]. This is what I found: READYMADE BRANDS 2 people said that MISSION brand causes no reaction and Catherine followed this up for me - "I spoke today with Isabel in Consumer Affairs at 1-800-600-8226, regarding the GF status of Mission Corn Tortillas. She assured me, after checking extensively, that they are not only GF in the ingredients, but they are made in a separate facility from the one in which they make their flour (as in wheat!) tortillas." I was particularly interested in this brand as I know it is available where my brother-in-law lives. Thanks, Catherine. I person said that BEARITOS tostada shells caused them no reaction, but did not give a confirmation of GF status from the company. The local celiac group in California recommends LA HACIENDA - they are made locally and have indicated that they do maintain separate "lines" for corn and flour tortillas. From the archives: April 98 - A call to 800-632-6900 revealed that KROGER brand corn tortillas are gluten-free. 1 person recommended that white corn tortillas are better than the yellow corn type (milder, softer and more like flour tortillas). MAKING TORTILLAS 4 people suggested that I make my own corn tortillas from masa which is cheaper, easier to store and lasts longer than readymade tortillas. I collected a number of recipes to do this - some from private replies, some from the archives and some from recent postings on the List. 1 person suggested that I buy a Mexican cookbook and said that the best are by Diane Kennedy. 2 people suggested that I buy a tortilla press. GENERAL ADVICE Several people reminded me to tell my brother-in-law to read all labels and ingredient lists carefully, especially as some companies make both corn and wheat tortillas and the packages can look similar. MASA & ANOTHER QUESTION? 1 person recommended that masa should be stored in the freezer. Several people me that true masa is gluten free and comes from only corn and lime. However, now that I am considering asking my brother-in-law to buy me some masa as well as readymade corn tortillas, I have another question: Is masa always GF and always good for making tortillas or is there a particular brand or brands which I should ask my brother-in-law in New Jersey to buy? Thanks to all who replied to my first post and thanks in advance to anyone who can reply on my new question. Best GF wishes, Liz (Ward), Dublin, Ireland
