<<Disclaimer: Verify this information before applying it to your situation.>> I wrote: "Can anyone tell me what kind of questions I should ask a prospective doctor to determine if he's qualified to treat celiac disease and/or is sympathetic to its attending problems?" I received about a dozen replies. People suggested the following questions: 1. Ask the Dr. if he's ever diagnosed celiacs, how many, and does he/she have any celiac patients now. If so, how many? If the numbers are few in these categories, you may want to find another doctor. 2. Ask the doctor what the usual protocol is. 3. Ask what books the doctor recommends for you to read. The person responding said she found that many doctors go ballistic if you sound like you're an intelligent patient and she wants them to recognize her as a thinking person, not one to "practice" on. (I liked this one!) 4. Look for a university specialist known for celiac management. It's well worth the trip. 5. One person said CSA/USA had a list of doctors who were members. She also said that somewhere on the website she saw state by state listings and a person with a phone number. (This sounded interesting. Does anyone know how to find this website?) 6.Ask the doctor what his opinions are regarding the sensitivities claimed by some and to tell you more about the disease. This way you can test his knowledge. 7. Call immunologists in your yellow pages and ask them if it is their area of speciality. I'd like to thank everyone who took the time to respond. Some of the questions I'd already figured out, but there were several excellent suggestions which I had never thought of. Lani Stoneham, ME
