I am troubleshooting a computer that had been working fine for about 3
months. Its a HP Vectra, 120 mhz, 16mg ram 1.2 gig hard drive. Windows
96 connected to a Novell Network and like I said it was working fine. A
computer consultant came in to install Rumba (connectivity software to
access our IBM AS/400). Something did not go right now when we boot up
we get an error something like this:

Windows Registry or System.ini refers to device file but device file no
longer exists.

C:\Windows\System\VMM32\NTKERN.VXD

I check System.INI and found no reference to NTKERN.VXD. I searched for
the netkern.vxd file and found it in Windows\System. I tried restoring
the registry but it did not work.

Any ideas short of reformatting the hard drive and reinstalling
everything?

Thanks for your assistance.
