<<Disclaimer: Verify this information before applying it to your situation.>> This is not about my family, but some one else's. I think the point is that lots of people who should know better do not take the celiac diet seriously: A (very very thin and pale) woman overheard me asking about ingredients at a take-out counter the other day. She said she had the same allergy. Not quite an allergy, I said, have you ever heard of celiac disease? Yes! she said. I have had it since childhood! She had a hint for me. My son is a doctor, she explained, and he says take two unbuffered Bayer before eating and you can having anything! (n.b. I have not tried this myself and am not recommending it.) But of course that doesn't stop the autoimmune reaction, I said, and the other ramifications... Oh yes, she said cheerfully, I have osteoporosis. But she trusted her son, the doctor. So she eats whatever she wants. With a couple of Bayer aspirin. Yikes! Mary Brown NYC
