     Hello out there:

Historic school buildings are in a crisis...local school boards are
surplusing, closing, and demolishing old schools at an alarming rate.
The National Trust is aware of the issue and we are currently working
on a new INFORMATION booklet that will address concerns of what to do
     with aging schools.

In the interim, though, we need information ASAP about states that
have adopted more sensitive programs or legislation that favors
preserving historic schools. I understand that the states of Maryland
and North Carolina have passed legislation that requires, at a
minimum, a feasibility study of the resource before demolition can
occur. I need to know more about the details of that legislation.
Also, are there other states who have adopted similar laws that help
protect historic schools...Florida, others??? Please let me know and
provide contacts so I might get additional information.

     Thanks for your help.
