<<Disclaimer: Verify this information before applying it to your situation.>> The "Seventh International Symposium on Coeliac Disease" was held last September in Tampere, Finland. Last fall, the list gave you an "eye-witness" account of the symposium, as dictated by Dr. Joseph Murray and then transcribed and edited by Ann Whelan (publisher of Gluten-Free Living). At the symposium, abstracts of all the various studies and reports were handed out in a thick publication entitled simply, "Free Paper Abstracts". The Tri-County Celiac Sprue Support Group has published an article that summarizes and in some cases interprets some of the more important information covered in these abstracts (special thanks to Jim Lyles for this work!). It covers topics such as where celiac research is (and isn't) happening, the prevalence of CD, possible techniques for diagnosing CD in those who are already on a GF diet, alternative approaches to the endomysial antibody tests, other problems associated with CD, and thoughts about the oats question. The article has been reviewed by Drs. Joseph Murray and Thomas Alexander. The article is available as a reference file on the listserve. To obtain a copy by e-mail, send a message to [log in to unmask] containing the following line: GET CELIAC TAMPERE The article is also available at our web site: http://rdz.stjohns.edu/library/medic/celiac/index.html For those who want to read the complete articles that the summary touches on, the official proceedings from the Tampere conference will be available for purchase by the Finland conference organizers in the next few months. We will let the list know how much it costs and how to order them as soon as we learn the details. Bill Elkus Los Angeles
