I just recently subscribed to the casein/lactose-free list [log in to unmask] and there may be some FAQs that I should investigate first but I might get some answers from members as well so please be tolerant. I just read Connie Pearce's post about having some mild intestinal problems in her pre-teen years and then having DH show up 40 years later. My question is this......if you have CD (either knowingly or unknowingly) and you continue to eat gluten (either intentionally or unintentionally) is it a given that you will also develop DH? I hope not. I try to be very careful with my diet (the intestinal problems caused about all of the suffering that I wanted to deal with). Someone else on the celiac list indicated that continued intestinal problems even while being gluten free might be related to being casein intolerant as well. Does anyone know what the actual medical tests (i.e., blood tests, maybe biopsy of the small intestine, etc.) might be needed to diagnose casein intolerance? What symptoms and what permanent damage or consequences might happen if you continue to ingest casein? Would you also be at risk of lymphoma cancer from casein ingestion? I asked these questions about casein intolerance at my last GI doctor's appt. and I did not get an answer. He des- cribed the lactose problem and so-called treatments for it in great detail. He said he did not know anything about casein intolerance and that he would have to look it up but that was usually something that showed up only in infancy. He said he thought my continued intestinal problems were more likely to be "just something that I ate". Duhhhhh! I thought health problems that cause DH, CD, casein intolerance, lactose intolerance, (insert your own intolerance) were all cases of being "just something that you eat" but without diagnosis you continue to eat things that make you sick. I will be going through another endoscopy with biopsy of the duodenum on June 25th. I am wondering if casein intolerance might manifest itself by showing flattened villi the same way it does for gluten intolerance? One more question...on two separate occastions someone posted to the celiac list that Progresso Soups had a Cream of Mushroom soup that was gluten free. I look in every grocery store I go into for Cream of Mushroom soup in the Progresso brand and I can't find it. Is it possible that the two people were referring to a Progresso Soup with mushrooms being just one of the ingredients or are the stores that I am patonizing just not carrying the CREAM of mushroom variety?
