For both, when popular science started recommending that people quit eating foods high in said substance, they failed to take into account that the body needs *some* and is quite adept at manufacturing it for itself if it has to. They also fell into the fallacy that if a large amount of said substance is found during a bad situation, *any* amount of said substance must also be bad in every situation.
