<<Disclaimer: Verify this information before applying it to your situation.>> My celiac brother just had a second heart attack that is not the classical type. He has none of the common lifestyle risk factors such as being overweight, etc. His cardiologist is suggesting that there may be some connection between the celiac condition and a heart attack risk from poor absorption of folic acid, an essential water soluble vitamin. Folic acid also goes by the names folacin and folate. My nutrition book confirms a reduced absorption of folic acid in nontropical sprue where there has been damage to the jejunum portion of the small intestine. It reports no direct connection to heart complications. Though the doctor suggests he saw a research note on this vitamin malabsorbtion connection with CS, he has been unable to verify it. Does anyone have direct experience with a folic acid deficiency resulting from celiac sprue? If so, what was the treatment for the condition? Does anyone have experience or, better yet, know of research papers detailing a heart attack connection traced to folic acid deficiency caused by celiac sprue? We are intensely interested in finding some reason an active, apparently healthy, 40 year old male has suffered two unexplained heart attacks. Help with any lead will be greatly appreciated.
