<<Disclaimer: Verify this information before applying it to your situation.>> Elizabeth Jenkins wrote that she has been diagnosed (5 days ago) with CD and also with iron and folate deficiencies. She had been diagnosed with chronic fatigue symptoms 6 years ago. Elizabeth asked how long it would take on a gluten-free diet before her symptoms go away. I am responding because I also had iron, folate, and B-12 deficiencies shortly after being diagnosed with CD. About that time, I had both balance problems and problems with word substitution, for which the technical name is paraphasia. The balance problem, which kept me from being able to walk a straight line down the street, went away several months after I began monthly B-12 shots to correct pernicious anemia. After the B-12 problem was taken care of, my folate levels returned to normal. The paraphasia appeared a few months later and disappeared a few months after that. I'm not sure if it was a late-appearing reaction to the B-12 and folate deficiencies or a response to the small amounts of gluten I was getting in my diet at that time. Elizabeth, the good news is that at least one other person has had problems remarkably similar to yours, and they did get better. However, if your pattern is the same as mine, it may take several months. Nancy Jackson, Iowa City, IA. USA <[log in to unmask]>
