<<Disclaimer: Verify this information before applying it to your situation.>> Mary Alice Warren, Director of the Gluten Intolerance Group of Florida died Tuesday, January 10, 1995, at home. Mary Alice was a respected and nationally known celiac, who fought for the rights of celiacs before Congress and the FDA. She believed in the avoidance of all gluten by celiacs and was constantly questioning food and medical companies for the actual ingredients in the finished products. Her unceasing work resulted in a knowledge of the rigid requirements of the GF diet by many commercial companies. Besides informing celiacs which items to avoid, she led the initiative in finding or requesting modification of products for improvement in a celiac's lifestyle. Floridians or visitors to the Sunshine State will always remember her work in establishing The Gluten Intolerance Group of Florida. Although based in Florida, the group had a profound impact on lives throughout the world. This effort improved the life of experienced celiacs, brought light and hope to the newly diagnosed, and informed the medical community of this little known disease. Her work as Editor of The Celiac ActionLine established a new standard for all support groups to follow in the reporting of food and medical information. Her daily motto in fulfilling the endless requirements of the support group activities was Celiacs Helping Celiacs. Many of her celiac friends will remember the long hours she gave in arranging three elegant cruises to the Caribbean and Mexico. These cruises offered celiacs the first opportunity to forget the requirements of the diet and enjoy a cruise and its complete selection of elegant, gourmet foods. Everything from breads to deserts was available for their dining pleasure. The wonderful food, excellent speakers and new found friends were some of the highlights for those on the cruise. The celiac community and her family have lost a leader, a lion and a wonderful friend. Her standards, goals, and desire to improve the celiac lifestyle will continue. Mike Jones and Mary Kump understand the requirements and the established standards and will continue the activities as a living memorial to Mary Alice. Donations may be made to the Gluten Intolerance Group of Florida, 12733 Newfield Drive, Orlando, FL 32837-7435. These donations will be forwarded to the University of Iowa for celiac research.
