The ATHEN leadership team is pleased to announce a special ATHEN State of Accessibility Virtual Event to be held on May 14, 2024, from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM Eastern time. This event will be focused on AI, STEM with an emphasis on 3D Printing, Google and Microsoft Document and Slide comparisons and so much more. Keep reading for more details. Most importantly, the event is free!

 

Join us during the week of Global Accessibility Awareness Day for a State of Accessibility Seminar from an ATHEN perspective. 

The Access Technology Higher Education Network (ATHEN) brings together people from private industry, education, and enthusiasts to give you updates centered around AI, STEM, document, and platform accessibility, and more.

The seminar will be held from 11:00AM to 3:00 PM Eastern on May 14, 2024. Register for ATHEN’s State of Accessibility Virtual Event.

Event Details:

AI and Accessibility 11AM – 12PM EST

· Keynote Speaker: Manish Agrawal, Founder and CEO of IAccessible, a social enterprise that connects product makers to people with disabilities. Manish is blind and brings his years of industry experience and AI expertise to talk with us about the importance of AI for people with disabilities, the ethical use of this technology and how the industry can ensure that AI continues to bridge the Digital divide. 

STEM and 3D Printing 12PM – 1PM EST

· Joshua Hori, Christopher Correll and Jim Allan will present this introduction to your 3D printing journey with an emphasis on giving you tips, techniques, and strategies. We will talk with you about how 3D printing can elevate the work you do with students, how students can best take advantage of this technology and how best to accomplish the use of this technology in your curriculum.

Microsoft vs Google: A Comparison of Accessibility Features in Documents and Slides 1PM – 2PM EST

· Speakers: Terrill Thompson and Gaby de Jongh, University of Washington

· The speakers will share their findings from a research project in which they’ve compared how Microsoft Word and PowerPoint differ from Google Docs and Slides in their support for key accessibility authoring techniques. What are the things you need to consider when using these products and how can you help elevate the conversation across these platforms? ATHEN will have a specific ask from the community and will extend to you options to truly make a difference in the landscape of education for students. Closing Q & A Panel 2PM – 3PM EST

· We end the day by opening an hour of Q & A from our panelists. Other topics are also on the table so feel free to bring your tough questions for our assistive technology experts from across the industry.
