Each of the following paragraphs is a comment - some slightly edited - from one Listmate. My Gastroenterologist told me to take Ultimate Flora Probiotic--on 2 weeks/off 2 weeks--it says gluten-free on all their boxes--I take the "over 60" ones because I am. Diagnosed Celiac: I do not take probiotics. I took them for a while and found they didn't seem to do much for me I take Now brand Probiotic - 10 25 Billion I take 1 capsule a day. I used to take Pearls IC but had problems with the dairy and soy. I don't take anything special when glutened My son, age 13, has been diagnosed with RCD, type 1. Our GI doctor said there is no evidence to support that probiotics help with celiac disease. He has never been told to use probiotics in the seven years since being diagnosed I am medically diagnosed and I use Align. I have IBS and my GI recommended it. It helps the IBS. I don't take anything when I am glutened. I vomit and have diarrhea and can't hold anything down for 12 hours or so. Self-diagnosed, medically confirmed: Regularly: ? R-Garden's Inner flora 1 pill 2X daily and R-Garden's L. Salivarius 1X daily. When glutened: R-Garden Inner flora 2 pills 2X daily I use Align generic from Walmart. GI gave me Align. Generic is very similar. States gf on box. Biopsy diagnosed in 1997. Up until 3 year ago, I never took a probiotic - none of the doctors I saw ever mentioned it. But 3 years ago . . . was diagnosed with an additional auto immune disease called collagenous colitis. Told me it is not unusual for someone with celiac to get this colitis after a bad gluten ingestion. Said taking an Align probiotic every day was a very good idea. I have taken Align every day since. Have no idea what good it does, but am not willing to stop it to see what difference it might make. I get it at Costco usually, cause their price is better. Diagnosed by blood test and biopsy: I usually use culturelle with 10 billion cultures. 2 capsules daily (20 billion cultures) normally. If I have to take an antibiotic, I need to use about 6 capsules daily. My gastro. MD recommended at least 20 billion cultures of acidophilus daily. I use Dr Ohhira's Original Formula twice a day. I don't use any dry/unrefrigerated probiotic supplements. If I take any, it's in a yogurt (Activia) or a liquid refrigerated brand (Kefir). Medically diagnosed. Rite Aid Brand 300mg once daily (3 strains) regularly and when glutened. I take Keybiotics and have found it excellent. My own comment: It seems that, since we do not know which strains we are actually lacking, the most important features are the number of different strains included - as opposed to the sheer quantity of cells. And, maybe more important, the ability of the living cultures to survive the gastric acid and digestion so that they are still viable when they reach the intestine where they are needed. I am looking at Jarrow from Super Supplements, which is shelf-stable with 8 strains, provided in a special capsule that does not disintegrate until it reaches the small intestine. Any comments? I will summarize any addition comments that I receive.
