I want to join the countless number of people around the globe celebrating the life of Nelson Mandela. And for everything that he lived and died for, I dedicate this poem to those who are inspired by him and see themselves in the words and meaning of the poem.

Somehow deep within
the confines of your conscience

Somehow deep within
the corridors of your most basic instincts

And somehow deep within
your capacity to bring out the best of your humanity
something refused to give up
something refused to surrender completely.

This is our sense of what is right
our sense of what is humane and acceptable.

This is our sense of the struggle
the one that is within us
and the one we wage on behalf of each other.

This is our sense of what is right.
our sense of what is the truth;
what is humane and acceptable.

There are people who have been committed
and are sincere to their beliefs and principles.

They have refused to compromise their ideals or themselves.

There are people who suffered the alienation
separated from family and country.

They refused to join those who corrupt or be corrupted.

They refused to join the ranks of those
who victimized or become victims
those who turn a deaf ear and a blind eye
and harden their hearts at the plight of others.

And admist the rancor and the clamor
the silent flow of the river Gambia
they maintain their quiet but dignified existence.

They are also within the ranks of the Diaspora.

Some have been silent,
others have broken their silence
they give expression to their convictions.

People have found their voices again.
Let silence no longer be an option.
