Greetings-- Is the "firmware" up to date? This is a 'hardware-level' version of the OS driver. If it is not up to date, you'll need to search for a firmware driver for your specific make and model of the optical drive, and install it, in order for the OS driver to work with the hardware you have. Its amazing that you guys freely give your time to help others. I have now got the machine back to factory settings, great, but I still have the problem with the dvd, it only opens intermittently and it wont "see" the disc when one is inserted. There seems to be a problem with the driver and I have tried to update the driver but it states the existing driver is up to date, I tried "uninstall" and the dvd disappeared from my computer. I then clicked again on update driver and again it said driver is up to date. I have looked on the internet but there only seems to be sites that scan your computer and ask for money - I don't mind paying but I am a little cautious of having the laptop scanned and buying from unknown sources. Is there a safe site for drivers? Incidentally, while writing this, a cd suddenly started playing, I had put it in on one of the infrequent times the draw actually opened about an hour previously!! Normally the draw doesn't open either by pushing the button or right clicking in "my computer" I managed to get an email to Acer support so I will just see if they have a solution. Anyway, thanks again for helping me get the machine back to factory settings. Regards, John.
