Friday, September 30, 2011The president of the Republic continues to treat more women suffering from barrenness with the latest treatment on Thursday of at least 101 patients that formed the 8th batch of the infertility treatment.

The Gambian leader, His Excellency Sheikh Professor Alhaji Dr Yahya Jammeh, the brainchild of the initiative attended to the patients that were drawn from diverse backgrounds at the Glass House at State House in Banjul.

Like the previous batches recently treated and discharged, the eighth batch of the President’s Alternative Treatment Programme (PATP) will also be confined in Kanilai shortly after leaving State House for a period of seven days during which they will undergo a daily treatment.

The infertility treatment, like other components of PATP is being bankrolled solely by the Gambian leader, who offers the treatment free of charge to the patients.

In his words of wisdom to the patients before the treatment commenced, the Gambian leader reminded them that they will be confined in Kanilai purposely for his treatment and as such they must not portray negative attitude towards each other or engage in activities that have no business with the treatment, especially intolerance or quarrelling.

He also urged the patients to desist from petty talk during the treatment and concentrate on taking their medication, while craving their indulgence to be faithful and know that the uneasy experience that they have gone through was something destined to happen to them.

He said: “What I can tell you is in my treatment I seek the blessings of God and with His grace you will conceive as it is only Him who gives and refuses one a child. I know that you have long since been hearing all sorts of words, but such is the experience that God destined that you must go through.”

The ‘Medical Myth Buster’ as fondly called for his treatment also told the patients that taking his treatment do not in anyway mean that they will conceive immediately, maintaining that it is only God that blesses one with a child.

He explains: “You may take this medicine and within one week you conceive or within one month or months. But you may also take this medicine and you are not being able to conceive even for two years, that is God’s grace.

So do not be discouraged if you hear that one of your fellow batch mates conceived earlier before you even though you all took the medication at the same time. But what is important is that if you take my medication, no matter how long it is, by the grace of God you will conceive.”

President Jammeh also cautioned the patients undergoing his infertility treatment not to make any attempt to be taking his herbs along with any other medication, be it conventional or otherwise, warning of the consequences attached to that.

Child Spacing
While urging the patients to report to the officials of the treatment programme anytime they conceive with a view to further give them guidance and avert avoidable complications, President Jammeh also seized the opportunity to express concern over the lack of child spacing among women.

He stressed that people must respect spacing of children as stipulated in the Holy Quran, as lack of it is detrimental. He urged the patients to be sensitive in this regard, noting that in as much as they want to get all the children they couldn’t have for all the years that they were barren, lack of child spacing could be dangerous.

Speaking to reporters in an interview shortly before the commencement of the treatment, the director general of the PATP, Dr Tamsir Mbowe harped on the increasing demand of the Gambian leader’s infertility treatment among women.

This, according to the PATP DG goes to show the effectiveness of this infertility treatment and the high confidence people have in it. He pointed out that once the success rate goes up under any treatment, the demand is always high among the patients.

He added: “The demand is so high that we have a series of screening processes that the patients undergo before finally coming here for treatment. Due to the success rate of the treatment the patients keep coming.”

Dr Mbowe disclosed to reporters that due to high demand for the treatment, currently they have on their waiting list more six thousand patients awaiting to get the treatment. He assured of their commitment to have all those patients treated.

Ansumana Jammeh of the PATP who also spoke at the occasion expressed similar sentiments, while advising the patients to adhere to the rules and concentrate on the treatment.

Patients’ ordeal
The trial and tribulations of the other patients treated in previous batches were no different to that of the latest batch undergoing treatment. Some of the patients that were interviewed at the State House grounds Thursday took turns to narrate their years of uneasy experience in trying to get rid of infertility.

They like other patients also went through a string of difficulties and had committed lots resources into other treatments but to no avail.

Amie Sambou of Tallinding said she has been battling with barrenness for three good years, adding that she spent money on other African traditional treatments but to no avail.

“The success of this treatment and the way people are treated easily is what motivated me to join the programme,” Sambou told reporters.

Astou Jarju, who said she traveled all the way from Dakar, Senegal explained that she came to know about the treatment on TV while in Dakar. She noted that she had visited many marabouts, but none of them could solve her four-year infertility problem.

Sainabou Gitteh of Tallinding said her barrenness is now nine years and that despite traveling to many places such as Cassamance and Dakar in search of a solution; she couldn’t get rid of her ailment. She expressed high confidence that with this treatment, her barrenness would soon be a thing of the past.

All the patients did not end their interview without commending the Gambian leader for coming to the aid of women, while praying for his wellbeing.
