The guy from Streits in NY just phoned me.  He said his production manager informed him that it was one bad batch with the vanilla cake mix that's causing the bicarbonate of soda (baking soda) to react before baking. Sounds like it was exposed to moisture in production.  So he is sending me a refund. He it is not rancid, but to discard it.

They did not have trouble with the chocolate mix and assured me that the vanilla would be fine next Passover.  

So if you bought any vanilla and have an issue, contact them. I got the email address from their website on the box.
