GGC disburses over D900, 000 to seccos in CRR, URR <http://observer.gm/africa/gambia/article/ggc-disburses-over-d900-000-to-seccos-in-crr-urr#map> Africa <http://observer.gm/africa/news> » Gambia<http://observer.gm/africa/gambia/news> Monday, May 09, 2011 The Gambia Groundnut Cooperation (GGC) Friday disbursed cheques amounting to D921,522 to 24 seccos in the Central River and Upper River Regions (CRR and URR) at a presentation ceremony held at the URR Governor’s Office in Mansajang Kunda, Basse. The disbursement was the 25% commission retained during the groundnut trade season and belongs to secco societies. It would be recalled that GGC had already given 75% commission during the groundnut trade season. The money can be used to settle debts as well as buy fertilizers and seeds for the upcoming farming season, but it is left to the society to decide what they want to do with the money. Speaking at the occasion, Alhaji Omar Khan, the governor of URR thanked GGC for the disbursement, stressing that the money belongs to the whole society and not individuals. He advised societies to use the money wisely and inline with the consent of the general society membership. For his part, Modou Jack, the GGC Administration and Human Resources manager, urged the seccos to open accounts with Trust Bank to keep the money. He added that the society has to decide on how to spend the money. Saihou Danso, departmental administrator of Agricultural Services, thanked the seccos for a job well done, while urging them to use the money for the benefit of the entire society. He suggested they could use the money to settle any debt they incurred during the trade season. Anthony Carvalho, managing director of GGC explained that the 25% commission is an addition to the 75% received during the trade season. He disclosed that they will be disbursing about D5 million across the country. Commenting on certain negative stories in the press about the GGC, Carvalho again made it very clear that GGC does not deal with farmers directly. He said it is either the private trader or the societies that go between the GGC and the ordinary farmer. “As far as we are concerned, we have fulfilled our obligation. We don’t owe them a butut. We have paid everything,” he stated, while advising them to go back and pay the farmers. Yusupha Gomez, Trust Bank manager in Basse informed the beneficiary seccos that they can receive their money anytime they wish, while briefing them on the procedures of how to open a bank account. Other speakers included Abdoulie Khan, executive secretary of ASFA; and Hoggo Sowe, who spoke on behalf of the seccos presidents. The meeting was attended by Andrew Dacosta, GGC disbursement officer; and Malick Bobb, finance officer of GGC.
