oh by the way, they are answerable to the general membership of the udp since those are the people who elected them. They are not the government but a shadow opposition cabinet.

secondly, I think you overlooked some of the thing I have posted before. I am on the record stating some of the overtures UDP made to PDOIS, the recently one being Alhagi Ousainu Darboe's tireless effort to personally engage PDOIS- literally chasing Halifa on every possible line of communications-. Halifa persistently refused to talk to him and insisted that Mr. darboe take to the people whatever message he has as he [halifa] and the pdois party are not interested to hear him. So I don't know what you talking about when you said ' unless those overtures are made they can never be reciprocated. The truth is; they have been made several time and it didn't change a dime in PDOIS's intransigence.

You said this may be Ousainu's last time, However, what you failed to realise is that UDP is not about Ousainu. Therefore, ousainu's candidature should not be your focus in this issue. This suppose to be a national project and that is why it is imperative that it is based solid principles that are universally recognised and cherished by all.

Thanks, once again.

The executive committee should be answerable to the electorate. They cannot conclude without experimenting that that overture will not pay off. It would have been worth the effort.

You see unless those overtures are made they can never be reciprocated. As the supposedly the biggest party, they should provide the leadership our country bleeds for. Our Leaders need being positive, giving overtures and compromises and quit giving us excuses. PDOIS may not be helping but surely selfless overtures which sure create an atmosphere and even an opportunity to tackle the thorny issue of coalition. Ousanou of all people should know that this may be the last chance.

Thanks KEJAU for your thoughtful comments. As far as my information is concern, all these points were raised in the Executive meeting and there was a big inclination of travelling that route, unfortunately however, PDOIS's intransigence was the problem and as a result it was felt the move will highly likely be unproductive in terms of opening that new page you alluded to.

One thing we all have to remember is that the UDP alone can't make unity a possibility. Our overtures will have to be reciprocated by others if we are to make any progress.

Daffeh,

In the same vein the UDP should support the other opposition candidates especially if it fields no candidates of it's own. No matter what transpired, we should turn a new leaf as Gambians are watching and less forgiving!

"Oh the UDP just could not find a viable candidate". The bumblebees are brainstorming. Haruna.

Haruna, I hope no one will come out with such a silly banter. Several people offered their candidature to the UDP and others recommended to them by the people of Wuli East. The decision not to fill in a candidate was taken by the executive purely in the national interest and was debated upon quite extensively before a final agreement could be reached.

Its NADD vs APRC in Wuli East By-Elections; Signs of Tactical Opposition Alliance??

The ground has been set for the much-awaited bye-election in Wuli East constituency, after the ruling Alliance for Patriotic Reorientation and Construction (APRC) and the opposition National Alliance for Democracy and Development (NADD) on Monday nominated their candidates for the elections.
While the ruling party fielded one Saidou Sabally, a native of Passamas Fula Kunda in Wuli East district, the opposition NADD's candidate is Suwaibou Touray, the same candidate who lost to the ruling party's candidate in the last legislative elections.
Presided over by IEC official Alieu Momar Njie, the nominations took place at the Independent Electoral Commission's regional office in Basse Mansajang Kunda.
The bye-election, which followed the death of Bekai Camara, National Assembly Member for Wuli East last month, was scheduled for 28th April 2011.
Speaking to this reporter in Basse, shortly after his nomination yesterday, Saidou Sabally the APRC candidate expressed optimism that he will sweep the polls. He said the ruling APRC will register even more votes in Wuli East this time around than in the last legislative election.
NADD candidate Suwaibou Touray told journalists that all political parties in this country have their programs and policies, and that his party's policy has been proven 100% in The Gambia.
According to him, there must be winners and losers in any election, noting that the current situation in The Gambia shows that people must participate in elections or else democracy will fail.
"The type of development we have in this country is cosmetic development," Touray said, adding that the priority of the people of Wuli is the construction of roads, and that the ferry service is in a deplorable situation.
Meanwhile, Yankuba Colley the APRC National Mobiliser told this reporter that there is no single opposition party in the country that can challenge the APRC.
In his view, come this bye-election and any other election, the APRC will sweep the polls.
