Hon. Bekai Camara, the National Assembly member for Wuli East in the Upper River Region (URR) passed away Sunday at the Royal Victoria Teaching Hospital (RVTH) after a brief illness.
Hon Camara, a member of the ruling APRC, was elected to the National Assembly in 2007. Prior to his foray into politics, the late Hon Camara worked as a freelance reporter with the then Gambia Weekly (1988-1990); media assistant announcer/reporter Radio Gambia (1990-1994); programme assistant Env. Education and Communication, NEA (1994-2003); and assistant producer GTSTS (2003-2007).
The late Hon. Camara was also the vice chairman of the National Assembly Select Committee on the Environment; one time president, Network of Journalists on Population and Development; and one time president of The Gambia Association of the Physically Disabled. He was also the chairman of the Commission on Policy and Legislation, West African Network of Parliaments on Environment and Climate Change. The deceased National Assembly member will be given a State funeral today, Monday, March 7th, 2011.
