Dear All,
I have another question.  Now, just in the last week, I have heard of at least people, in addition to myself, who have encountered this situation with 8 gig SD cards.  I had a similar experience a couple of weeks ago.  My SD card had been only either in my card reader attached to the usb connection on my computer or inside the stream, yet it totally quit working, and I was unable to retrieve any of the 31 books that I had stored there.

Is there something about the Stream that perhaps corrupts our SD cards after we have been using them for a couple of years?

When I mentioned this situation and asked this question of Humanware's technical support, the person I was speaking to suggested that my card was probably inferior, but it was a standard brand, not some discount knock off, and I actually found that implication kind of indulting.

Hi,
Wow, is this timely or what?  I just discovered that I'm getting media error 3's on a couple of SD cards in my collection, so I'll have to try this procedure.  One of my students is also having trouble with some of her cards.

I have a couple of questions.
1. What causes the media error 3 in the first place? Does that always indicate a corrupted file system, or can it be that the Stream just can't handle certain brands of cards that are 8 gigs or larger?

2. if I create the new profile on the Stream as you described, will I need to then replace any UAKs that I have? I've got one for BARD and one for RFB&D.

Thanks in advance.

Best regards,
Tom Lange

Subject: [VICUG-L] solving the Media Error 3 on VR Stream

Thanks to the tech support folks at Humanware, and using their suggestions by trial and error, I seem to have fixed the problem of the Media Error 3  announcement from my VR  Strem. Here's how to fix it.
First, create new folders to back up the contents of the SD card (use a card reader for this). Transferring 22 RFB&D and NLS books took 49 minutes. Then, when files are replicated (include your Text, Notes, and whatever else you had), reformat the card. Click on the drive holding the card and choose Format option. This will erase any old data.
But you have a backup so it' okay.

Meantime, shut off the Stream. Hold down the Bookmark key and 5  key simultaneously as you turn the device back on. You will hear the announcement "Creating  New Profile".

Now, take your re-formatted card in its card reader and copy and paste your backed up files onto it. When you're done, be sure to select "Safely Remove" before you unplug the card reader from the USB port.

Put the card back in the Stream and turn the device on. Voila!! It should work perfectly!!

That's what happened last night and I was comfortably ensconced in the book I had to interrupt reading when the Stream started acting up. Whaddya know: "Media Error 3" says the Stream and that was that. Turns out to have been the SD card, apparently corrupted beyond repair. Fortunately, I had a second SD card which I  formatted and then onto which I copied the backed up files.

So far, so good! So give it a shot, Penny and the rest of you who reported similar problems.

Thanks!
