Please forward this to all who may be interested/suitable. Contact details and instructions on how to apply are below. PhD scholarship, coastal management University of Auckland, New Zealand A mixed modelling collaborative framework for coastal management in Auckland, New Zealand NIWAs Coastal OBI framework offers funding for a PhD project aimed at contributing to collaborative science in the field of coastal management. The PhD project will (1) conceptualise and explore modelling strategies that might be developed to produce knowledge about social and biophysical systems relevant to coastal management, (2) identify a suite of coastal management problems that could potentially be used to explore the range of knowledge and understandings of translation issues likely to be encountered by modellers working on coastal issues, (3) develop a simplified contextualised mixed-modelling framework through collaborative processes, (4) conduct an in depth investigation of one or more issues using this framework from the perspective of making decisions that balance different values and breath and depth of ecosystem response and certainty in management outcomes. The School of Environment at the University of Auckland provides an excellent forum for trans-disciplinary research. The School has extensive collaborative research relationships with other academic departments within the University and with other universities both in New Zealand and overseas, and with private and public sector organisations. This research project is trans-disciplinary; candidates will be requires to develop their research against a background of social, economic and ecological sciences. Support for the PhD project includes: a stipend of NZ$25k per annum excluding fees (n.b. international PhD students pay the same annual tuition fee as domestic students); an in-field research budget; a Postgraduate Research Student Support scheme designed to facilitate academic and professional development through conference attendance and short term hosting by relevant science and policy institutions. The PhD scholarship is a unique opportunity to lay a career foundation through involvement in a major policy community, working on internationally significant coastal policy and management questions using innovative collaborative science approaches. The research will be co-supervised by Professor Richard Le Heron, Dr Mark Dickson, and Dr Karen Fisher, School of Environment, University of Auckland and Dr Simon Thrush, Principal Scientist, NIWA. How to apply: Potential candidates must have a first class Honours or Masters degree (or equivalent).
