The Department of Justice is initiating a Special Agent recruitment to create a register of qualified candidates to fill current and future vacancies within the next 6-12 months.  *Vacancies may be in Madison (Dane Co.), Milwaukee (Milwaukee Co.), Appleton (Outagamie Co.), Wausau (Marathon Co.), Eau Claire (Eau Claire Co.), and Superior (Douglas Co.).

 

Job Duties:   

Special Agents are full-time sworn law enforcement officers with the Division of Criminal Investigation, which provides assistance to local law enforcement agencies and investigates crimes of statewide importance and/or those that require highly specialized investigative resources not otherwise available to local agencies.  Special Agents: carry firearms and conduct criminal investigations; perform undercover investigations and surveillance operations; execute search warrants; make arrests; prepare evidence for court; testify in court; interview witnesses and interrogate suspects; maintain records and prepare reports; establish working relationships and participate on teams; adapt and react to diverse situations; and, function in high stress situations.  Special Agents are assigned to field operations in a regional office and investigate criminal activity involving:

 

  • Suspected arson: fires of a suspected incendiary nature, explosions of criminal origin and fires involving loss of life.

 

  • Investigative services: domestic security and investigations connected with domestic terrorism; financial crimes and complaints regarding embezzlement, securities fraud, identity theft and criminal anti-trust matters; covert surveillance, computer evidence recovery and crimes against children; high-level drug trafficking investigations through initiating independent investigations and cooperating with other agencies; criminal violations by public employees or government entities, including public records and open meeting violations; homicides, organized crime and other major crime cases of statewide interest.

 

  • Gaming Enforcement: pari-mutuel racing, the state lottery, Indian gaming, charitable gaming, bingo and illegal gambling.

 

Special agents may be subject to strenuous physical activity and/or adverse environmental conditions.  Each special agent is armed with a handgun and handcuffs.  Special agents occasionally wear ballistic vests, and may also be armed with a shotgun and/or a baton.

 

Special agents work predominantly daytime hours, Monday through Friday, but weekend and evening work may be required.  Narcotics investigations tend to require personnel to work more night and weekend hours to accomplish their investigations.  Work assignments may require overnight stays, and special agents may be called on to work during off hours and/or required to respond to assignments on short notice.

 

Job Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of general law enforcement practices and procedures; knowledge of criminal investigative techniques; ability to write clear, complete and concise reports; oral communication skills.

     
SPECIAL APPLICANT REQUIREMENTS:

  • Applicants must be certified as a Wisconsin law enforcement officer at the time of application (or have valid law enforcement certification from another state that is accepted by the WLESB).
  • Prior to final appointment, applicants must meet Wisconsin Law Enforcement Standards Board "recruit" requirements, which are passing a character and background investigation, drug screening and physical examination, which attest to the applicant's "fitness to discharge assigned duties and responsibilities of a law enforcement officer";
  • Applicants must be at least 21 years of age upon appointment;
  • Must possess or be eligible to possess a valid Wisconsin driver's license upon appointment;
  • Have no unpardoned felony convictions or convictions of domestic violence offenses;
  • At the time of application, applicants must have completed four years of higher education (i.e., at least 120 academic credits); or at least two years of full-time certified law enforcement experience along with 60 academic credits; or four years of full-time certified law enforcement experience (including at least 60 academic credits that would meet the Law Enforcement Standards Board requirements, or have been employed as a certified law enforcement officer since February 1, 1993 that exempts them from the 60 academic credit requirement).
