Kejau

Please contribute to the admirable cause geared at alleviating the tremendous mental trauma of the Manneh family. No one thinks Kejau is ever going to sit on his opinion, a characteristic that alone suffices in cautioning NM from even attempting to either embarrass, and, or, disrespect you. Baba's reference to your phrase "big mouth" was a simple affirmation of your right to express your opinion, and as such, the context does not permit the interpretation you accorded it. In other words, you misread both NM, and Baba.

On the substantive issue, even if inadvertently, you appear not to have given NM, and Baba, a fair hearing. Chief Manneh's tragedy is a function of the profession he embraced, and some of his colleagues this side of the Atlantic benefited tremendously from Sheikh Professor Dr Jammeh's assault on journalists in The Gambia. Even before the 2006 report of the International Bar Association, and the 2008  report of Amnesty International regarding the assault on the profession in The Gambia, the UK Home Office Country Report itself acknowledged that the Sheikh's government was pretty hostile to journalists.

Do you not think that those Gambia journalists now out of the zone of danger have a responsibility to demonstrate practical solidarity and empathy with the plight of former colleagues situated as Chief Manneh?

With your background as someone who attended the Diploma in Law course at the GTTI, and dealt with legal questions as part of his job in the services, I am happy to induct you as an associate member of the legal profession in The Gambia. Our friends in the journalistic community are not known for their shyness when it comes to expressing their views on topics of public significance. I happen to think that NM, and Baba, aired widely shared sentiments.

Now I am happy to hear this community of the pen in its own defence. Until it gets to court and Kejau is drafted in as part of the legal team fronting a claim for defamation, our friends in the journalistic community should be allowed to conduct their own defence. It is not inconceivable for some members of the community to have privately contacted the Manneh family, and for them to have channelled any assistance through different avenues.

I suggest we hear them on the matter, and I beg you to rush to Barclays for a worthy cause

Njok,

I was going to pay when I can, but not any more, because I was not paid untill yesterday, and so was many people I know, but because of your reckless utterances, am cautious of paying, lest you thought because of your reminder. No, Njok, it was not a reminder but an act calculated to cause embarrassment and bafflement, it did succeed! It was Sarah, and not obligatory but to encourage you to continue being UK's collection point with the help of Dave Manneh, I rest my case here. If you thought you did right with this outburst, then think again, because am sure most people will hold their purses.
Kind Regards,

Kejau Touray

Kejau, take it as a reminder, you initiated the UK drive and should therefore pay.  For media practitioners and other human rights campaigners, particular those active online, they should just make a reality check and accept an oversight, but still cough up and contribute.

Well Kejau, it's good to have a big mouth sometimes. Your point is well taken. It was indeed your idea that Njok collects in the UK and we have benefitted immensely from that. Thanks for the feedback

Hi Baba and Njok,

I think what is embarrassing and baffling is Njok's impatience and utterances. Most of those contributions happened in less than a month and you, Baba wrote few days ago that you have enough for months to come. How many people contributed in the last few days for instance, even in the US? The end of month was just today! Now anyone who planned to contribute later may feel that others will see her contributions as just to feel good, to satisfy Njok and Baba or better still to brush the embarrassment away! I think this was a wrong move and feel obliged to comment, as much as I respect Njok and yourself for the wonderful work you doing for human rights and Chief Manneh's family...  It was anyway my suggestion that Njok collects from UK and that may have somehow stimulated the contribution not only in UK but also in the USA, hence my big mouth again !

Kind Regards,

Kejau Touray

Am surprised that all the contributions I received so far towards this fund, is from Non-Media people.  It is a shame that people who are practising or ex journalists, human rights and democracy campaigners living right here in Uk and very active on online fora; don't even see fit the need to chip in the odd tenner.  "Ndimbal Nah Cha Feka Lohoi Borom" so they say God helps those who help themselves.

Thanks Njok. And thanks to the Manneh family and all who contributed to this worthy cause. I think the money should be transfered to our treasurer Joe Sambou. We have the Manneh family covered for at least one more month with the funds already sent and we will see when next to send them more. It seems we have them covered for at least three to four more months, if not for the rest of the year. Thanks to all who have helped the GPU-USA make this possible. May God repay your kindness.

Fellow Gambians and Friends of The Gambia,

The GPU-USA is issuing another call for contributions to help support the family of disappeared journalist Chief Ebrima Manneh. Since we issued the first call over two weeks ago, we have only received a contribution of $50 from one individual. This is rather disheartening considering the outpouring of outrage and sympathy over Chief Manneh's disappearance in the hands of the Jammeh dictatorship. The GPU-USA has already sent the family $500, which is enough to keep them going for at least three months. See below for an update on those funds from GPU-Gambia Chairperson Ndey Tapha Sosseh. A small amount can go a long way in alleviating the suffering of this family. We are therefore renewing our call for contributrions, however small, to enable us to keep helping this family. No amount is too small - 5, 10, 20 dollars - whatever you can contribute. Please write out your checks to our able treasurer Joseph Sambou and mail to him at 8046 South Kimbark
Avenue, Chicago, IL 60619. We wish to ask those who have already pledged to please mail in their checks. Thank you all.

Baba G. Jallow
Secretary General
GPU-USA

(Below is the text of the email from GPU-Gambia)

Baba,

I've received the money (D12,858)and have informed the rest of the gpu executive and advisors.  We will be calling the Manneh family to make an appt for midweek.

As discussed yesterday, we have agreed to spend the money as follows

Condiments
4 bags Rice @ 850 = 3400
2 20 Ltr Drums Cooking Oil @ 750 = D1500
2 Bags Sugar D350 = D700
1 Bag Onions = D300
Total = D5900

Cash for Father = D1500
Cash for Mother = D1000
Grand Total = 8400

The remaining 4458 will be topped up to 5000 by me and given to them in two monthly installments of D2500.

We'll also make sure that it gets adequate coverage.

Ndey Tapha
