removing the outer protective fire-coat to expose an inner more porous portion of the brick. Then again, gaged and carved brick is just that.

after last years workshop with Gerard Lynch I am to understand that brick for gageing and carving is baked and is not the same as the fired brick with an outer protective firecoat. 
 
baked? fired ? this is a hard concept to grasp for a carpenter but I touched them both and they were , they were    different.
