It has been my opinion that the speckles help "break up the surface" visually. I have worked with both and found plain white glazed tile looks dull and lifeless and often do not look good in a field. The speckles (even widely spaced speckle) seem to unify better.

Honestly, I think it was an aesthetic penchant, purely arbitrary STYLE.

Which brings up something my physicist brother-in-law mentioned to me a few years back re: the triplay of cost:time:quality and how you can only have 2 out of the 3 on a project, he added STYLE as a fourth part.
