<<Disclaimer: Verify this information before applying it to your situation.>> My 20 year old daughter has been diagnosed with celiac since age 14. She is very careful about her diet, does not drink alcohol, and is genrally in pretty good health. For the past 3 months she has been having Rt upper quadrant abdominal pain. She decribes it as a constant dull pain and then she gets sharp, stabbing pains frequently. She's also been having diarrhea all this time, and nausea. She rarely eats fatty or fried foods, avoid dairy most of the time as I don't think her villi ever fully recovered enough to produce lactase. She's had similar episodes in the past that lasted months. Her doctor and I both feel this is gallbladder pain, yet all the testing he has done has come back normal. She had a HIDA scan done 4 weeks ago that showed normal gallbladder function and no stones. We ended up in the ER last night because she was doubled over in pain. Again, everything looked normal except she was dehydrated from all the diarrhea. The ER doctor was very kind and symapthetic but could not give us any answers excpet to go ahead with a cholecystectomy to see if the pain is indeed gallbladder related. I'm a nurse and have always been told that people with bowel disease should avoid having their gallbladder removed because it can cause dumping syndrome. I've seen patients end up with some serious malabsorption issues. So I'd like to avoid just removing her gallbladder if there is any other way to manage this. Her GI MD feels the same way. But she's trying to work and go to college, and she is just miserable. Has anyone else dealt with this, or have any advise for us? She is willing to pursue alternative treatments if it can help, and is talking with her MD about starting an antidepressant to help her manage stress and chronic pain. We're also considering a strict food elimination diet to see if we can discover foods that are triggering her pain. We are pretty much willign to try anything at this point! Thanks in advance for any advise....Shannon (frustrated Mom of Jasmin) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ CONFIDENTIALITY NOTICE: If you have received this email in error, please immediately notify the sender by e-mail at the address shown.
