Summary: “Smell”

Original Post: This may be a bit of an odd question but....I have been wondering if other people with CD have noticed changes in their ability to smell, such as increased awareness of some smells and reduced for others? I know this is hard to quantify but I have noticed in the last year that I am very aware of some smells that the people around me barely notice and at other times the opposite occurs, people start commenting on a smell and I don't notice it at all. I am thinking this may also influence my awareness/sensitivities to tastes?

Response: I received a total of 20 replies. There was no consensus among the respondents other than their pleasure at discovering they were not alone!

Overall, the responses varied with changes in smell to be normal for everyone to some who got physically sick from specific smells. Many indicated changes in their sensitivity to certain smells related to their diet (GF) or exposure to gluten. Others expressed concern about environmental chemicals and sensitivities.

One very helpful response identified that vitamin deficiencies can influence smell and recommended checking zinc levels. Two other people mentioned changes in smell related to sinus issues or dry sinus cavities.

Thanks to everyone who replied.
