Our senior partner, Jan Pokorny, 94, lives across the street from the
"crane" building. His family was evacuated, in a rapid fashion, after the fall
of the boom, which crushed the upper corner of the adjacent building, showering
his house with bricks and concrete, some of which went through the roof,
resulting in considerable water damage to the top floor. The rear yard looks
like Dresden the day after.
Jan's family was permitted to enter the building yesterday, after
receiving a notification from NYC that the damage to their house had been
temporarily repaired. I accompanied them to assess damage. Interestingly, taped
over the VACATE order previously placed on the door by the city, was a citation
from the DOB, informing them that their building was in violation of the
building code due to the roof damage, and that they had ten days after the
receipt of the violation notice to complete repairs. The notice was taped to the
door four days before that were allowed back to their house.
While we were standing on the roof of Jan's house, the wind picked up and
three bricks fell onto his roof from the adjacent building. it's good to know
that the DOB is on the job...
